Steamrip Until Then Free Download (v1.2)
Until Then is marketed by its developers as a sort of detective game. Its synopsis states that Mark, the game's protagonist, finds himself caught up in a chain of events where he must uncover a mysterious truth amidst strange disappearances and unreliable memories. City Bus Manager
However, after playing the game to the end, I have to admit that I am baffled by this choice of description. There is some truth to the idea that there are unknown reasons for certain events that occur in the plot, but it is such a small part of the story that it never really felt important. On the contrary, it feels like a subplot that takes a back seat to the overarching point the game is really trying to achieve.
And what is that point, you might ask? Well, I would say that Until Then Moment was meant to teach us about the different ways that people deal with feelings like loss, loneliness, and abuse, especially in particularly difficult times, and that there really is no right way to do it.
It's in exploring these themes that this game really shines. It does a fantastic job of portraying the same emotions in different ways across its different characters. It also takes the time to give them depth and flesh them out so that when the twists and turns happen, you feel like, "Oh, I didn't expect that, but it makes sense."
Now, what makes the game successful is the same thing that slows it down, which is kind of unfortunate. I mean, you start the game expecting this overarching mystery, but the story picks up very slowly and it doesn't really start to tie together much until the third chapter.
Instead, you get individual moments with Mark and his friends that lead to their growth or a deeper understanding of their feelings, but you don't realize how important that revelation is until you discover the twists at the end of the story.
I would say that as a mystery novel, this game feels poorly written, but as a coming-of-age story where you have to deal with your demons and those around you, it's great.
As for the characters, it's hard to properly evaluate most of them because even though many of them are introduced, the story really only focuses on four of them. The four that it does focus on are the ones that I really enjoyed. Mark's best friend Katie was a favorite and her storyline had me in tears at the end. Louise and Nicole seemed like similar characters to me. It’s hard to understand even when they were trying to express themselves, but their interactions with Mark were really meaningful and I loved how they made him open up.
Mark himself was a great protagonist and his revelation towards the end really surprised me. It was great to see him grow. Even though it took him to painful places, he was always willing to try, which made me want to root for him. There were a lot of great characters like Sofia and Riedel, but they didn’t get much screen time as the story progressed, so all I can say is that I liked them when I saw them.
