The legendary Dwarf Fortress is now on Steam. Build a fortress and try to help your dwarves survive despite the threats of famine, dragons, and madness. In this challenging construction/management sim/roguelike, each generated world presents a unique challenge, whether it’s the dwarves with their own simulated personalities or the aquifers. Watch what ultimately leads to your civilization’s decline and learn from it next time, until something inevitably goes wrong. Hundreds of animals and monsters, many of which are randomly generated for each world, plus poems, musical forms, instruments, and dances for your dwarves to practice and perform in. A dynamic weather model tracks wind, humidity, and air masses to create fronts, clouds, storms, and blizzards. Over two hundred rock types and minerals can be found in the appropriate geological environments.

There’s nothing significantly new or changed under the hood. It’s still good old Dwarf Fortress, but with default graphics and music support. A few tweaks won’t change anything. You may already be familiar with the tileset mod packs from Michal “Mayday” Madej and Jacob “Ironhand” Bowman.

Together, their efforts create a brand new tileset with brand new pixel art from artists Carolyn Jong and Neoriceisgood. The Steam Edition of Dwarf Fortress will include a 15-track soundtrack composed by Dabu, Simon Swerwer, and Agueda Macias, including tracks in the Dwarven language. Getting started has never been easier! We’ve improved the new player experience by adding tutorials to help you build your first fort and keep your Dwarves happy.
